Welcome Earthlings! Special Focus 5 Contracted words using apostrophes This week we are learning to use contracted forms of words using apostrophes for omission of letters.
We’ve tried to include a little spelling activity for each day, just like we do at school. This week there is a choice of completing online activities at BBC bitesize (they are all on the same page you just need to scroll down) or pages from the Twinkl activity booklet as well as some of our usual. You choose! DAY 1: Watch video How to use apostrophes in contractions - BBC Bitesize Write out your spellings. Think carefully about which letters have been removed and replaced by an apostrophe. You choose: Pg 2 booklet. (see below) If you can’t print it just write 4 pairs of words using the two words and then the contracted form. OR Complete online BBC bitesize activity 1 (under the video) Fill in the gaps. DAY 2: Complete the contracted forms booklet pg 3. Again just write words out in your exercise book if you can’t print. OR Complete the BBC bitesize activity Fill in the gaps 2. DAY 3 – Write a sentence for each of your contracted words or Complete BBC bitesize Highlight the words (scroll down the page) DAY 4- LOG & LEARN – practise your spellings again – write them out in your spelling book. Use a red if you can to mark the apostrophe just like we do at school. Eg Can’t DICTATION – get an adult to read out these sentences one at a time, use my turn your turn until you can say it back to them (just like we do at school) then write the sentence. Get the adult to check you have wrote it our correctly and spellings are correct. Remember to practise any you found tricky with a crayon if you can – just like at school. I don’t like it when it is too wet to play outside. Are you sure you wouldn’t like another pack of sweets? Day 5 : Mixture of TEAM TEACH & FOUR IN A ROW: I’ve combined these 2 games into one so that you can play at home. Write your spellings onto slips of paper. Sort them into easy and hard, remembering to put the easy ones on the top. Turn a word over have a good look at it, use your fred fingers to sound it out. Hide it, then write the word. Science
We are continuing to learn all about our bodies. This week we are looking at how our bodies change over time during the different stages of life for a human. You will need a pencil, a ruler and a piece of paper for this lesson.
ART
This week we are looking at the work of yet another colourful artist, his name is Henri Matisse.
Read through the PowerPoint below and then have a go at creating you very own version of his collage 'Snail'.
We hope you are all keeping safe and well at home. Thank you for all the wonderful pictures you sent in last week - they really made us smile! It was lovely to see you and what you've been up to. Here is this weeks learning. As always do what you can, any queries just email in and also send us the brilliant pictures of what you've been up to!
Love to you all -The Year 2 Team (Mrs Cannon Mrs Reed Mrs Nunn Mrs Marsh & Mrs Vorley)
Welcome Earthlings!
We’ve tried to include a little spelling activity for each day, just like we do at school. DAY 1: Please read the script (see below) with your grown up and practice your spellings in your spelling practice book. DAY 2: Dots & Dashes (see below - you don't need to print it - just write a few out in your spelling book. Use 'fred fingers' to sound out the words and add dots & dashes – then check your answers) DAY 3 – Write a sentence for each of your words (The ones with the suffix) DAY 4- LOG & LEARN – practise your spellings again – write them out in your spelling book. Maybe use different colours circling any bits you are finding tricky. DICTATION – get an adult to read out these sentences one at a time, use my turn your turn until you can say it back to them (just like we do at school) then write the sentence. Get the adult to check you have wrote it our correctly and spellings are correct. Remember to practise any you found tricky with a crayon if you can – just like at school. I liked it when mum told me a joke. I loved it when we hiked up the hill. Next turn the word card back over and tick all the correct letters, circle any errors and correct them. Can you get 4 in a row? Give your self a star for each word you spell correctly. SPELLING TEST: Please ask a grown up to test you on your spellings and make a note of your score. |
Practise warm up exercises. Use the videos (see below link) to help you remember how to do these or maybe learn new ones so when we are all back together you could be the class expert and help all the boys and girls. (and Mrs Cannon & Mrs Reed!) |
Handwriting animations: (We use the continuous cursive font Route D and letter choice 3 at Belle Vue) If there are individual letters you need to practise just click on those and practise them too. See weblinks below.
Practise joins: Each day: Watch animation, practise in the air, on your arm or maybe with different colours and different sizes. Then practise writing a full row of the join in your exercise book, next a row of each word and finally the sentence. Remember to join all your words. Day 1 –join ai words stain pain sentence Will the snail like the rain today? Day 2 –join ch words chain chop sentence Do you like chips? Day 3 –join ck words sock lick sentence Clocks go tick tock. Day 4 –join er words better letter sentence Where are my socks? Day 5 – join ff words off shuffle sentence The dragon vanished in a puff of smoke. If you could send a photo of your handwriting that would be brilliant – Remember you are trying to be neater than Mrs Cannon! |

This weeks words are words that we use a lot in our writing but are tricky to learn as they do not use phoneme patterns that we normally use. Some are also homophones. Practise your spellings with the activities below.
IDENTIFY THE TRICKY BITS!
Write out your spellings as a list in your exercise book or on paper. Think about which parts of the word will be tricky. Use your 'Fred Fingers' to sound them out then stop and think when you get to a tricky part that doesn't 'sound out' and use the graphemes/phonemes we know. EXAMPLE would 'w - u - d' u sound is spelt with oul. Write your spellings again and underline the letters that make the tricky part.
RAINBOW WRITE: Practise your spellings by writing them out using different colour pens or pencils. Write that tricky part with a bright colour so it really stands out.
UNDERSTAND MEANING Some of the words are homophones. To help understand what the words mean and how to use the correct version write a sentence for each of your spellings.
FINAL PRACTISE & TEST Play a game that is similar to 4 in a row & team teach. Write each of your spellings onto slips of paper and then sort them with the easiest on the top of the pile. Read it carefully, turn it over, write it in your exercise book and then check each letter to make sure you've got it correct. Repeat with all words. Can you get 4 in a row? Give yourself a star for each one you get correct. TEST: Get someone in your house to test you on the spellings you have been practising this week.
Our maths this week is all about multiplication and making groups.
Please watch each days video in turn, then complete the corresponding worksheet. Don't worry if you can't print the sheets off, talking through each sheet with a grown up is just as good. If you do manage to print them off, keep them somewhere safe and bring them into school once we are all back together again.
SCIENCE
Following on from our work last term, recognising and sorting foods into the 5 food groups, we would like you to work through the power point identifying healthy and unhealthy foods. Then, using the sheets provided create yourself a nice healthy lunchbox. If you don't have a printer just draw the outline of a lunchbox on a piece of paper and fill it with healthy foods. Aim to make your lunch as balanced as possible referencing the quantities of the eatwell plate.
Don't forget to label your drawings.
Continuing with Brilliant burritos! Cross curricular project - Design & Technology, Science & English!

Write it in your exercise book.
This week we are not completing a RWI spelling unit but are consolidating all the year 2 common exception words instead. We have had a test in class to see which ones we know and which we still need to work on and will work on these personalised lists during our handwriting sessions this week and the coming term. Practise the year 2 words from the list below. There is an activity booklet to help you too. Just write the activities into your exercise books rather than printing it all off.
