smiley Welcome 3AR & 3TH to the Year 3 page smiley

Please find below general information for your child in Year 3.

PE

PE days for both classes are on a Monday and Wednesday. Please provide your child with kit suitable for both indoor and outdoor sessions. This term our Monday sessions will be with the Carlisle United coaches!

Homework

Reading - The children are expected to read at least three times a week. All children have been given a bookmark which contains useful questions that can be used at home to deepen their understanding of their chosen text.

All children are expected to change their own books in school once they have finished.

Maths - The children need to access TT Rock stars and complete at least 30 minutes at home each week. All children have now been provided with their login details. There will also be work set each week on MyMaths that will be an extension of the work they have been doing in class.

Spelling - The children will be given a new spellings list to practise every Monday. They will be taught a new spelling pattern  during our daily sessions in school. They will then practise words (including these patterns) and a selection of our Year 3 words at home which will be tested in school every Friday.

Thank you for your support

We would like the children to research the seven continents of the world and create a poster / leaflet / powerpoint or information book about them. They could research things like the biggest country in the continent, the number of countries that they continent has, any famous landmarks, famous people form the continent, traditional food that is eaten....it is up to them what they research and how they present their work. The children could draw pictures / maps to go with their research. We can not wait to see the final pieces of work. Remember this does not need to be fully completed this week.

Below are some documents that might help with the children's research. They might also want to use the internet to help with their research or any books that they have at home.

If you have any questions, you can also email the address above.

If you want to do things in a different order each day or you are struggling with something - that's ok, please remember to do what you can.

We have been reading the book Stone Age Boy. Here is a link to the book to help you to remember what happens:

Stone Age Boy read by Teacher Sabina

Stone Age Boy book.

This week we would like you to write your own version of the story but set in the Iron Age. It will be called Iron Age boy OR Iron Age Girl.

Monday - Below is a list of all the things that happen in the Stone Age Boy story. In red are some sections of the story that will need to change for you to turn the story into Iron Age Boy/Girl. Fill in the boxes to plan your Iron Age story. See if you can use your knowledge of the Iron Age to change any of the boxes with red sections. (Don't worry if you can't yet, there are lots of things below to look at to help answer your questions and to help you write a fantastic story.)

Stone Age Boy

Iron Age Boy

Walking in the woods.

Trips and falls down

Lands somewhere cold and dark

Goes outside and meets a girl – she looks different

Gets taken to a camp and given some stew

Sees people doing jobs in the camp

-making fire

-flint knapping to make tools

-preparing food

-making clothes using animal skin

Goes hunting with Om

This box needs to be about making an Iron sword

Goes into a cave and sees cave paintings

Gets chased by a bear

Falls down

Ends up at home

Tuesday - Begin to write your story. Focus for today on the beginning of your story, up until you meet your Iron Age character.

Think about:

- How will the Iron Age person look different to you?

- Remember to check your own sentence length, capital letters, full stops and spellings.

Wednesday - Today you are going to write about the character's home.

Think about:

- Will they live in a camp?

- What will they give you to eat when you arrive?

- What jobs will the Iron Age people be doing?

Thursday - Please write the section of your story where your character learns to make an Iron Sword. Below is a page from the book "The Iron Age" to help you write this section.

Think about:

- The steps in order for making a sword

- How it would feel to make that sword (would you be nervous, excited, etc).

- Use key vocabulary such as furnace, iron ore and bellows.

Friday - Can you finish your story? Use the video of a mine below to help you describe the setting (You only need to watch from 2:30min for about 1 minute or so):

Think about:

- describing the mine

- how your character feels throughout this part of the story

- Make sure your character ends up at home.

History

Monday - For your story tomorrow, you will need to be able to describe Iron Age clothing and to know what Iron Age people might have eaten. Use the links below to find out and make notes.

Try to answer these questions:

- What is a tunic?

- What colour would the clothes be?

- What materials would the Iron Age people have made clothes from?

- What types of food would Iron Age people eat?
