Belle Vue Primary School

Our School Library and 'Book Nooks'

At Belle Vue, we want our library to be the heart of our school. Whilst the library does sit in the middle of our school geographically, in 2017 it wasn't the magical place we wanted it to be.

Transforming a library certainly isn't easy! The project involved our whole community coming together: our school council providing the vision; parents and grandparents helping with building work and furniture assembly; staff giving up time after school and The Friends of Belle Vue fundraising to buy books, furniture and materials.

Our school council met and came up with a number of designs. They wanted two quiet areas to relax and enjoy a book: a New York 'loft style' living room and a magical forest. They came up with brilliant ideas about how this could look and how we could bring their vision to life.

First, we needed to clear the old library and furniture. We were even fortunate enough that some parents and grandparents with building skills, built us two walls to create the quiet areas the School Council had asked for.

What is a library without books?

Using funds provided by the Friends of Belle Vue, our School Council began asking classes throughout school which books/ genres of books would they like to see in the library. This resulted in a trip to a local book shop to actually buy the books!

The Grand Opening

In early 2018, thanks to a huge effort from our whole community, our library was finished and opened by the Mayor.

Our 2023 Library Update!

In-line with our Reading for Pleasure journey with The Open University, we have had a little update to our library. Most importantly, we bought lots of new books!

We now use the school library in two ways: a relaxing space to enjoy a good book and as a 'book shop' to re-stock our classroom libraries. Books have been curated into year-groups categories: long reads, quick reads, non-fiction, picture books, poetry and graphic novels.

Book Nooks

We are currently developing places around our school to sit and enjoy a book. Watch this space for updates...
